How can you successfully motivate your employees? This is the question many business owners and HR Directors ask themselves. The challenge is to sustain the strong motivation that an employee often demonstrates when first joining a company. Here are 10 factors to boost your employees’ motivation.

  1. Reduce meetings and reporting

Reducing meeting duration to a minimum and eliminating unnecessary meetings or reports frees up time for value-creating tasks. It also frees up time for employees’ personal lives. To avoid unnecessary travel, video conferencing should be favored whenever possible.

  1. Ensure a smooth onboarding process

On the new employee’s first day at the company, equipment must be available and colleagues informed of their arrival. This will help them feel confident more quickly. Otherwise, a rapid loss of motivation is to be expected.

  1. Build trust

Employees who feel trusted will be more effective. They need to feel encouraged and should not be penalized for the slightest misstep. Recognition of their work will also help them persevere in achieving their goals.

  1. Grant autonomy

Making employees more autonomous means giving them the ability to achieve set goals on their own, with greater efficiency. Once the framework is established, they make decisions and collectively determine the means to implement in order to reach their objectives. This enhances the sense of self-fulfillment, which is essential in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.

  1. Lead by example

Managers should not consider themselves superior to the rest of the team. It is a matter of respect, but also an effective way to strengthen team spirit.

  1. Optimized conflict management

Conflict management is a critical point for ensuring a positive atmosphere within the company. Here are two effective ways to achieve this:

  • Regularly organize meetings where employees can voice their concerns about blocking points.
  • Train employees in non-violent communication.
  1. Train and support

Training is an excellent way to show employees that you value them and hope to retain them within the company. With their new skills, employees will feel more useful and can take on greater responsibilities.

  1. Comfortable workspaces

The choice and layout of office space are factors that should not be overlooked. Pleasant workspaces with a comfortable break area send a strong signal that the company cares about the well-being and working conditions of its employees.

  1. Recognize your employees

Employee recognition is essential. It simply means remembering to encourage an employee when they invest in their work and achieve great results. Managers should also let them know when they are satisfied with their work. Caught up in the urgency of daily tasks, we often forget these aspects.

The employee will feel satisfied, reassured, and thus encouraged to deliver quality work and continue their efforts.

  1. Set objectives

If the objective is clearly defined, it will be a sure source of motivation for the employee. Once the objective is achieved, they will find satisfaction in the work accomplished. Objectives must meet the S.M.A.R.T. criteria:

  • Specific. The objective must be simple to understand, clear, and quickly comprehensible to everyone.
  • The employee must be able to measure whether or not the objective has been achieved. A measurable objective must be quantified or qualified.
  • The objective must represent a challenge, a motivating goal, but an acceptable one.
  • Realistic. A S.M.A.R.T. objective must be achievable.
  • Time-bound. Deadlines must be set so that everyone knows when the objective should be achieved.
